Hey there! We’re back from the race and we all did really well! It was a fun trip and I’m so proud of my friends and family for pulling together to Pole, Pedal and Paddle.

So this weekend, my family and I are doing the Pole Pedal Paddle in Bend! What is this, you ask? Only an epic 6-leg relay from Mt. Bachelor to the heart of Bend! The race goes as follows:

Downhill Skiing – Jackson

Cross Country Skiing- Allyn

Bicycle- Kyle

Run- ME!

Kayak- Jesse800 M Sprint to the finish line- Charlie

And of course, the road crew- Mom, Dad and Ashley

I’ve been gaining some momentum in my developing love for maps.

My Newest Map

Because when you think about it, what are maps? Really, maps are a pretty weird idea.

A promotional discount map

They are an abstraction of a place. They put dots to whole cities and are comprised of imaginary, invisible lines depicting borders- lines that people will go to war to protect, if necessary. Maps give order to an otherwise unbridled wilderness. They can guide you home or dare you to dream of travel. They can simultaneously comfort and confront you with the conflicting depiction of “home” versus “adventure”.

I like maps.

Sometimes I step back from my work and am overcome with the realization that 6 year old Erin would have loved what I do today.

Yesterday was one of those days. Drawing pretty things on chalk boards is a pretty amazing gig.

And now, just like 6 year old Erin, I need a nap and a juice.
