Lately I’ve been thinking about the cost of the decisions I make every day, especially when it comes to my career. 

See, I’ve realized lately that my time is pretty darn close to filled up. I’m about at my limit when it comes to what projects I can take on, and after a LOT of trial and error, I’m beginning to find a good balance of work/life. So I’m getting pickier. I’m weighing my options more. I’m choosing projects more carefully. And I’m still having to turn down work that sounds absolutely amazing. 

What I keep getting back to is the idea of Opportunity Costs, which is the “cost of any activity measured in terms of the value of the next best alternative forgone.” When you only have so much of X to spend (and X is your time and your creative energies), you have to be careful where you spend it. The problem with this way of thinking is that it makes you constantly second guess your work, and also your career path. It makes you a little bit crazy trying to think months or years ahead and work backwards to the present to make sure you’re on track. And I’m nothing if not a little overly analytical. 

That’s why, at the end of the day, I try to remember to live in the present. You can’t really know what your future may hold, and that can be scary but it could also be a great thing- the opportunities are endless.
